Volumetric weight is a shipping charge calculated from a parcel's size rather than its actual weight, used when a package is bulky but light.
Couriers bill on whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight. A large box of lightweight goods can therefore cost far more to ship than its weight suggests.
